Availability of Proton Therapy
As of January 2018 proton therapy is available in the Netherlands, specifically at the UMC Groningen Proton Therapy Centre, part of the UMCG Radiotherapy department. At first only paediatric patients, patients with head and neck cancer and specific skull base tumors are being treated with proton therapy.
The UMCG Radiotherapy department refers patients with other indications eligible for this type of therapy to other European centres, such as:
- Westdeutsches Protonentherapie Zentrum Essen in Essen (Germany)
- Heidelberger Ionstrahl-Therapiezentrum (HIT) in Heidelberg (Germany)
- Paul Scherrer Institut in Villigen (Switzerland).
If no European centres are able to accommodate a referral, patients can also be referred to one of the various centres in the United States.
